A Step in the Right Direction?

Alright PopCultureYay-ers,
We now have one more episode of The Office under our belts and it is paving some serious groundwork. A Jim/Pam engagement? We all knew it would happen but, I have to admit, I am not as nervous about it as I thought I would be.

The Office can not become predictable or lose it’s focus as a show that tells witty stories about the most mundane office events. However, by making Pam aware of the engagement and turning it into a typical Jim-Pam inside joke, perhaps we are heading the right direction. How funny was it when Jim said, “Pam….will you….wait while I tie my shoe?”

If Angela and Dwight were to get engaged (here’s still hoping for their reunion) or even Kelly and Darryl, then it would be HILARIOUS. But, Jim and Pam are so real. It would be like an actual engagement…normal and sweet.

You may remember how conflicted I was when Jim and Pam hinted at a relationship. I wanted it so badly yet feared what it would mean for the show. Yet, the writers didn’t let me down. I shouldn’t doubt them. They’ve made sales calls and health insurance funny. They made a broken pelvis hilarious. I even laughed hysterically when I heard Dwight put a cat in a freezer. Animals in freezers shouldn’t be funny, right? I mean, think about it, Dwight and Angela didn’t break up because they drifted apart or someone cheated. No, they broke up because Dwight FROZE her beloved feline. Why shouldn’t a Jim/Pam engagement be another opportunity for them to display comedic genius?

Now if we could just have Stanley in a few more scenes and perhaps a good prank on Dwight, I’d say we are back to The Office that I know and love.

Thoughts?

  1. OMG do u think we’ll be invited 2 the WEDDING????!!!!!1!!

  2. If you’re invited, I better be invited too. We can carpool.

My thoughts exactly. I was actually a bit nervous when the engagement talk began. In some ways I get a little uncomfortable when they kiss, make reference to sexual activity, etc. Maybe because they feel like my brother and sister. Maybe because I’m contemplating leaving my husband for Jim Halpert (not really…well, maybe a little bit.) However, my true feelings came out when Jim got down on one knee and I realized that I was biting my fist…apparently I am just a little bit excited. I did LOVE the shoe tie. This upset Freddie. He said that I would have been very angry if this had happened to me. I reminded him of our 8th grade lesson on dramatic irony and how the humor really rested in the fact that I know Jim really is going to propose because I’ve seen the ring and reminded him that this was not the case when he thought about tricking me many years ago and assured him that, yes, it was wise to go with a different approach.

  3. Ladies, have you forgotten me? I’m dying to know what you thought of the ending. Also, Melissa, I seem to have lost the other site again…
