One reason for our absence
We’ve been sucked into the readership cult for Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series. More specifically, I got sucked in, then I hooked Lindsay.
Here are some snippets of the email Lindsay sent to my friend Emily and me after finally she gave in to my nagging and started reading the first book:
Just so you know, I hate you both…Last night when I started the book I said I was going to read to page 150. I read to page 345. Then, I woke up this morning and got ready as fast as I possibly could so that I could read another 10 pages…There were moments while I was reading that I think I literally stopped breathing because taking time to breathe was causing my reading to slow.
More on Lindsay’s Twilight experience after the jump…
when she finished Twilight and had just started New Moon:
Here are my thoughts on the book:
My roommate said, “Oh yeah, aren’t those the next Harry Potters?” To which I responded, “Yes, if Harry Potter was half as creative, much sluttier, and addictive in a CW television kind of a way.” She said, “Whoa, so it’s really slutty?” And, when I thought about it, I had to be honest. “No, actually, I guess it isn’t slutty. But it feels that way.” I felt kind of like a little kid when you watch a movie and you see people kissing and you think it is a WAY bigger deal than it actually is. Like you are watching something you shouldn’t be allowed to watch…You should’ve seen me trying to read while drying my hair this morning. I dropped the hairdryer on my head about 3 times.

Go ahead and pick up Twilight. Don’t be ashamed. It’s okay if you’re not a teenager. There are others out there like you. That’s why your bookstore has a bajillionty copies of it. It’s the one that looks like this:

You can tell yourself you’re just going to read the first 100 pages.
[Ed.: I should add what Emily said in response to Lindsay's commentary: I know exactly what you mean. It's not slutty - it's really the opposite of slutty - but it makes me FEEL slutty. Just like watching the Real World Road Rules Gauntlet Hell Ring 20 or whatever it is now. It's such easy entertainment it's like my brain is slutty.]

Other people also need to read Twilight so that they can then read New Moon because Melissa and I seem to have confusing and conflicting opinions about the second book and I would like to hear what others think. So, Pete, start reading…
