Pop Culture Yay

Can someone please explain to me

why the Triwizard Tournament was ever allowed to take place? Super dangerous, and just for sport! I still don’t understand that one.

Catherine Hardwicke not returning for New Moon

I’m linking to the E! story because it employs the euphemism “not returning” rather than the ickier phrase that’s cropping up on other blogs.

ETA: Actually, just go directly to this story to read the dirty deets.

Zzzz

All the celebrity gossip right now is C-list (or worse) and boring. Chris Klein and Ginnifer Goodwin break up! New details of Jodie Sweetin split! Those are just from People. I can’t even bear to look at Us Weekly because I’m sure it’s all about Heidi and Spencer’s “wedding.”

Oops (re: previous post)

Apparently when I copied and pasted Lindsay’s and my chat about Twilight, something crazy happened and none of it showed up in Explorer. It’s fixed now. I know y’all were totally worried…

Aaaaand another post about this book we read that got made into a movie

wherein I post excerpts from an online conversation between Lindsay and me, where we laugh about Rob Pattinson saying that he wants to cry when faced with a mob of screaming fans, we critique the iTunes celebrity playlists put together by Twilight cast members, and we reference Kristen Stewart’s awkward interview on Letterman. But first, we must talk about the picture that prompted Lindsay to resign from Team RPattz:

How old are you?

Twelve.

How long have you been twelve?

A while.

SAY IT. OUT LOUD.

Teenybopper.

Are you afraid? Because I am very, very afraid. What is it about Twilight that makes me regress to the maturity level of a tween? (It didn’t take much regression to get me there, but still.) I followed a link to some Twilight-related Youtube video the other day and it began with “Brought to you by Seventeen magazine” and I was filled with shame. But not so filled with shame that I stopped watching.

So clearly I’ve been suffering from a relapse of my Twilight obsession ever since I saw the movie last weekend. I don’t know what to say about the movie itself; I have read so many reviews that at this point, I can’t differentiate between what I actually thought when I saw it and what I read somewhere.  Among all the Twilight movie-related articles and reviews, it should come as no surprise that my favorite was Cleolinda’s Twilight in Fifteen Minutes. I also really enjoyed “The Twilight Zone” by James Wolcott in Vanity Fair.

SNL with Tim McGraw

I thought SNL was unusually bad last night. The opening sketch was as boring as real C-SPAN and it kind of went downhill from there. The Clear-Rite “commercial” was pretty funny, and the James Bond bit had its moments, but there wasn’t much else that I found memorable. I didn’t get the turkey sketch at ALL, and I hate Bobby Moynihan’s waiter/bartender character. Tim McGraw was better than I would have expected, but he didn’t have much to work with.

I wonder when we’ll start seeing more of the new cast members…

Now back to my regularly scheduled programming

Now that the election is over, I’ve renewed my commitment to scripted television. (To Rachel and Keith: I still love you, I just…it was really intense for a while, and I need a break. It’s hard to say this, but I want the freedom to see other people. On other networks.) I’ll keep this post short because I should actually go to bed soon, but I just wanted to give a quick list of what shows I’m watching during their time slots or recording on my DVR:

  • How I Met Your Mother
  • The Big Bang Theory
  • The Office
  • 30 Rock
  • Privileged
  • The Daily Show
  • The Colbert Report
  • Saturday Night Live

That’s about it! I still haven’t really gotten into some of the other shows that Lindsay watches regularly, like Samantha Who?, Chuck, 90210 or Ugly Betty. I’m planning to watch the new season of Top Chef, and I think I have space for maybe one more show. So if you could recommend one show to add to my lineup, what would it be?

This is the first season I’ve religiously watched HIMYM and Big Bang, and I LOVE both of them. Every time I watch Privileged I find it illogical, but I can’t stop watching.

news flash

Melissa made an important pop culture life change. I think she needs to share her news.

DVR dilemma

It has happened. I’ve heard people warn of such problems, but I’ve never had them happen until now. Scheduling conflicts! I need a second DVR! I thought the normal ebb and flow of televison would prevent any conflicts - one show ends right before another premieres - but I was wrong. So very wrong. Read more…
